In short

Prostatitis is inflammation or infection of the prostate gland - most cases are chronic pelvic pain syndrome with no infection present, while acute and chronic bacterial prostatitis need antibiotic treatment aimed at the bacteria involved.

Recognise It

How prostatitis makes itself known

Pelvic and genital pain

Discomfort in the pelvis, lower back, genitals or perineum, which can be constant or intermittent.

Urinary symptoms

Difficulty and pain when urinating, increased frequency and urgency, and needing to go often at night.

Fever and severe infection

Acute bacterial prostatitis can bring a high fever, chills, nausea and vomiting, and needs prompt treatment.

Your Options

Treatment matched to your type

Chronic pelvic pain syndrome

The most common type, accounting for around 90% of cases - treated with anti-inflammatories, alpha-blockers and pelvic floor physiotherapy.

Acute bacterial prostatitis

A sudden infection needing prompt antibiotics, with hospitalisation for severe cases requiring intravenous treatment.

Chronic bacterial prostatitis

A longer course of antibiotics, typically 4 to 12 weeks, to clear a persistent infection in the prostate tissue.

Getting the diagnosis right

Examination, urine tests and, where needed, imaging identify exactly which type you have before treatment starts.

Common Questions

Before you book

Can prostatitis affect fertility?
Yes, especially chronic forms. Inflammation and infection can alter the composition of seminal fluid and affect sperm motility and viability.
Is prostatitis contagious?
Prostatitis itself is not contagious, although the bacteria causing bacterial prostatitis can be transmitted through sexual contact, so safe sexual practice matters.
Is prostatitis linked to prostate cancer?
Prostatitis is not a form of prostate cancer and does not increase the risk of developing it. However, the symptoms can sometimes overlap, so a proper medical evaluation is essential.
How long does it take to recover from prostatitis?
Acute bacterial prostatitis often resolves within weeks with the right antibiotics. Chronic forms, including CP/CPPS and chronic bacterial prostatitis, may need longer-term management with symptoms that fluctuate over time.
