In short

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with over 40,000 new cases diagnosed every year - it often causes no symptoms early on, which is why PSA testing and MRI remain the fastest routes to a clear diagnosis.

Your Options

Every treatment, under one consultant

Active surveillance

For low-risk cancer, regular PSA tests, MRI scans and biopsies monitor the disease closely, avoiding unnecessary treatment.

HIFU

High-intensity focused ultrasound heats and destroys cancer cells in men with localised prostate cancer that has not spread beyond the gland.

Hormone therapy

Blocks the effects of testosterone, often combined with radiotherapy or used after surgery to reduce the chance of cells returning.

Surgery and radiotherapy

Robot-assisted prostatectomy (RALP) or external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), matched to the stage and grade of the disease.

Common Questions

Before you book

How is prostate cancer diagnosed?
A PSA blood test and multiparametric MRI are the first steps. If needed, a targeted biopsy - carried out through the skin rather than the back passage - confirms the diagnosis while virtually eliminating infection risk.
What is the survival rate for prostate cancer?
The 5-year survival rate for men diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK is over 90%, particularly when it is caught early. Many men live for many years after diagnosis, especially with effective treatment.
What is the role of PSA testing?
A PSA blood test measures a protein produced by the prostate and can flag raised levels early. It is not definitive on its own and can occasionally lead to false positives, so results are always discussed alongside your wider picture.
How does prostate cancer affect sexual health?
Prostate cancer and some of its treatments can affect libido, erections and ejaculation. Mr Ghei discusses these possible effects and the support available before any treatment is agreed.
