In short

Kidney stones are hard mineral deposits that can cause sudden, severe pain in your back or side, often moving to the groin. Small stones frequently pass with pain relief and fluids - larger or stuck stones can be treated with shockwave therapy, laser surgery or keyhole removal, all available at Urocare London.

Recognise It

How kidney stones make themselves known

Sudden severe pain

Classically in the back or side below the ribs, coming in waves and often moving down to the lower abdomen and groin.

Blood in your urine

Stones can scratch the urinary tract as they move, turning urine pink, red or brown.

Nausea and urinary changes

Feeling sick, needing to go urgently or often, pain when passing urine, or cloudy urine if infection develops.

Your Options

Every treatment, under one consultant

Watchful waiting

Many small stones pass on their own with strong pain relief and plenty of fluids - monitored so nothing is left to chance.

Shockwave therapy (ESWL)

Focused sound waves break the stone into fragments small enough to pass - no incisions, usually as a day case.

Ureteroscopy & laser

A fine telescope reaches the stone and a holmium laser breaks it up - Mr Ghei holds a fellowship in urological stone disease.

Keyhole removal (PCNL)

For large or complex kidney stones - percutaneous nephrolithotomy removes the stone through a small incision in the back.

Common Questions

Before you book

Will my kidney stone pass on its own?
Many small stones do, with strong pain relief and plenty of fluids. Size and position decide it - that is why a scan matters. If a stone is too large or gets stuck, treatments like ESWL or laser surgery deal with it definitively.
How are kidney stones diagnosed?
A consultation followed by imaging - usually a CT scan, which shows the size and exact position of the stone. Mr Ghei arranges scans promptly at the same hospital group, so you are not waiting weeks for answers.
What does kidney stone treatment involve?
It depends on the stone. Shockwave therapy needs no incisions, ureteroscopy uses a fine telescope and laser with no cuts at all, and keyhole removal handles the largest stones. Mr Ghei talks you through the right option and the costs before anything is decided.
